Our history
CEBEDEAU is the first spin-off of the University of Liège. Founded in 1947, our non-profit association has since become the scientific and technical partner of manufacturers, public authorities, and research institutions. A true reference in the field of water-related research, CEBEDEAU carries out national and international projects and participates in the discovery of tomorrow's innovations for increasingly efficient and environmentally friendly water management and conservation.
The CEBEDEAU is founded by Edmond Leclerc, professor at the University of Liège. At the end of World War II, with the economy and industry in a fragile state, the government decides to support the creation of clusters in various sectors, including water treatment.
The early years were marked by significant challenges, notably a lack of qualified personnel in a field that was still relatively unknown. Despite these difficulties, hard work began. Wastewater treatment, a subject that was virtually unheard of at the time, attracted little industrial interest, and there was still no legislation to regulate this crucial area.
The first wastewater laws began to emerge, a major step for the sector:
Law on the protection of waters against pollution (promulgated on March 11, 1950, Belgian Official Gazette of April 27, 1950)
Royal Decree on the conditions for the discharge of wastewater not originating from municipal sewers (December 29, 1953, Belgian Official Gazetteof January 18-19, 1954)
Francis Edeline, a scientist and linguist by training, takes over as director of CEBEDEAU. He steers the institution toward a resolutely research- and development-oriented approach, a change that will shape the future of the research center.
The creation of CEBEDOC sprl marked a turning point for the organization. This company, created in part due to the publication requirement imposed by IRSIA, became CEBEDEAU's publishing house. With the birth of the “Tribune de l'eau” (Water Forum), a real network formed around French-language publications on wastewater, creating a community of experts and stakeholders in the sector.
Mr. Louis Vandevenne succeeds Mr. Edeline and takes over as director of CEBEDEAU. Drawing on his experience, he broadens the center's horizons, integrating new services beyond simple research. This leads to the creation of the sanitary engineering and laboratory departments, two new components that enrich CEBEDEAU's core activities.
The Crescendeau project is launched. This project aims to create a research and scientific expertise center dedicated to water, with a particular focus on the needs of public operators and industry.
The CEBEDEAU leaves its historic site in Val Benoit and moves to new premises at Aquapôle, on the Sart-Tilman campus of the University of Liège. This move marks a new chapter in its development.
In decline, CEBEDOC Publishing is dissolved, bringing an end to an era of rich publications that had become obsolete over time.
Stéphane Nonet takes the reins of CEBEDEAU. An engineer at the institution since 1991, he brings a new dynamic to the entire research center.
