CEBEDEAU • Resrecovery part two

Phosphate's valorisation

Resrecovery part two

Rethinking the ways in which wastewater is treated, so that it is no longer considered as waste, but as a resource to be valorized? A whole study, Resrecovery, was carried out at CEBEDEAU as part of Circular Wallonia.

🪨 The second part of the study focuses on phosphates. Extracted from deposits and used mainly in fertilizer production, they contribute to environmental problems such as eutrophication of watercourses, and their increased use is leading to resource depletion. Imported at over 90%, it is included in the list of critical raw materials drawn up by the European Commission. In recent decades, phosphorus-rich waste streams have been increasingly recognized as a promising secondary source of this element, enabling it to be recovered in a usable, bioavailable form.

📒 Extracting phosphorus from waste/effluent could reduce pressure on natural resources by limiting the need for traditional mining. Some technologies are already on the market. These are listed in this second part of the Resrecovery study.
